Harlyn Primary School

A Memory from Lisa Southwood (Now Pelaprat)

I was so happy to find that Harlyn Primary School is still in existence. I am now 67 and would have been a pupil there in its early days. In fact I lived in Tolcarne Drive and my garden backed onto the school playing fields. I have fond memories of the school and of Mr. Baker, Head Master, who was Welsh and loved to sing. I can remember Mr. Thorpe and his "bubble car" but am not sure if I was ever in his class. I know I was in "Clarabel" Clynch's class and have a class photo in an album back in the UK (I live in France). I remember being sent out of an art class for dabbing paint on David Pirie's nose and having to stand outside Mr. Baker's office. When he asked me why I was standing there I detected a hint of a smile on his face when I told him.... lots of happy memories of Christmas festivities, Nativity Plays, sports days and Morris dancing. Some of us went on to St. Mary's and St. Nicholas' Grammar Schools and names I remember are Peter Dimmock, Tom Stower (?) and "Slug" Rackley.
I will send on the class photos as soon as I can locate them.

Kind regards, Lisa Pélaprat (née Southwood)
